Product Philosophy & R&D
We do not formulate by trend. We formulate by evidence.
Our Core Philosophy
At Tend & Form, every product begins with a question: what does skin or hair genuinely need — and what is the most effective, honest way to deliver it?
We do not start with a concept and work backwards to find ingredients that fit. We start with the biology — how the skin barrier functions, how hair structure responds to damage and hydration, how the scalp microbiome influences health — and build formulas that work with these systems, not against them.
The result is a range that is deliberately focused. Fewer products, each doing more. No redundancy. No filler. No compromise.
Ingredient Selection: Evidence Over Trend
Every ingredient in a Tend & Form formula is selected based on three criteria:
1. Clinical evidence
We look for ingredients with peer-reviewed research supporting their efficacy. Not anecdotal claims. Not in-vitro studies extrapolated beyond their scope. Actual clinical data demonstrating measurable outcomes on human skin and hair.
2. Effective concentration
An ingredient listed on a label at a trace amount does nothing. We formulate at concentrations that have been shown to produce results — and we are transparent about this. If an active is in our formula, it is there to work.
3. Compatibility and safety
Efficacy means nothing if a formula irritates or sensitises the skin. Every ingredient combination is evaluated for compatibility, pH stability, and potential for adverse reactions. We prioritise skin barrier integrity in every formulation decision.
Key Actives We Work With
Retinoids
Among the most extensively studied actives in dermatology. Clinically proven to accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen synthesis, and reduce the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone, and congestion. We use retinoids at concentrations calibrated for efficacy with minimised irritation potential.
Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid & Derivatives)
A potent antioxidant that neutralises free radical damage, inhibits melanin synthesis, and supports collagen production. Stability is the primary challenge with Vitamin C formulation — we use stabilised forms and optimised pH ranges to ensure the active remains effective throughout the product’s shelf life.
AHAs & BHAs
Alpha and beta hydroxy acids exfoliate at the cellular level, improving texture, tone, and pore clarity. We use glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids at concentrations and pH levels that deliver results without compromising the skin barrier.
Hyaluronic Acid (Multi-Molecular Weight)
Hyaluronic acid at a single molecular weight hydrates only the surface. We use multi-molecular weight HA to deliver hydration at multiple skin depths — surface, mid-dermis, and deeper layers — for more comprehensive and lasting moisture retention.
Niacinamide
One of the most versatile and well-tolerated actives available. Clinically shown to reduce sebum production, minimise pore appearance, even skin tone, strengthen the barrier, and reduce redness. We incorporate niacinamide across multiple formulas for its broad-spectrum benefits and excellent compatibility with other actives.
Peptides
Signal peptides communicate with skin cells to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Carrier peptides deliver trace minerals that support enzymatic processes. We use targeted peptide complexes to support structural skin health and improve firmness over time.
Ceramides
Essential lipids that form the structural foundation of the skin barrier. Ceramide depletion is a primary driver of dryness, sensitivity, and accelerated ageing. Our barrier-focused formulas replenish ceramides in ratios that mirror the skin’s natural lipid profile.
Keratin & Amino Acid Complexes (Hair)
Hair damage is fundamentally a structural problem — the loss of keratin proteins from the cortex and cuticle. We use hydrolysed keratin and targeted amino acid complexes to rebuild hair structure from within, improving tensile strength, elasticity, and surface smoothness.
What We Exclude — and Why
Our formulas are free from ingredients that offer no benefit to the user and exist solely to reduce manufacturing cost or extend shelf life at the expense of skin health.
No parabens. We use alternative preservation systems that are equally effective and better tolerated by sensitive skin types.
No sulfates. Sodium lauryl sulfate and related compounds are effective cleansers but are unnecessarily harsh on the skin barrier and scalp. We use gentler surfactant systems that cleanse without stripping.
No synthetic fragrance. Fragrance is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis and skin sensitisation. Our products are either fragrance-free or use only minimal, skin-safe aromatic compounds where sensory experience is a deliberate part of the formula.
No unnecessary fillers. Every ingredient in our formulas serves a function — active, structural, or delivery-enhancing. We do not pad our ingredient lists.
Our Development Process
Research & Benchmarking
Every new product begins with a thorough review of the clinical literature relevant to the target concern. We identify the actives with the strongest evidence base and the formulation approaches most likely to maximise their efficacy.
Formulation & Stability Testing
We work with experienced cosmetic chemists to develop and refine formulas. Each formula undergoes stability testing across temperature and light conditions to ensure it performs consistently throughout its shelf life.
Compatibility & Safety Assessment
All formulas are assessed for ingredient compatibility, pH optimisation, and potential for sensitisation. We conduct patch testing and consumer trials before any product is considered ready for launch.
Efficacy Evaluation
We evaluate product performance against measurable outcomes — hydration levels, barrier function, texture improvement, and user-reported results over a defined period. A product that does not demonstrate clear efficacy does not make it to market.
Continuous Improvement
Formulation science evolves. As new research emerges and better ingredients become available, we revisit and refine our formulas. We are committed to continuous improvement, not to protecting legacy formulations for the sake of consistency.
Transparency as a Standard
We publish full ingredient lists for every product. We explain what key actives do and why they are included. We do not hide behind proprietary blend terminology to obscure what is actually in our formulas.
